It is very easy to setup wireless networking in Ubuntu but you will need some information about your network to connect the PS3 to it.

SSID (Network Name):: you can get this from Network Status in the PS3 XMB menu, or if you click on your wireless network connection on a windows machine it will have the name there.

WEP/WPA  Key::   this is just an encryption key it is normally found on the bottom of your router alternatively it can be found in your router control panel please look at you router manual for instructions on this.

Setting Up The Wireless Network

1. Click on the network icon in the top right next to the bluetooth icon.
2. Click ‘Create New Wireless Network’
3. Enter your network name sometimes called SSID you can find this in your network connection status while in the XMB on the PS3 or in your connection details windows on your PC.
4. Choose Security Type.
5. Enter Password/key
6. Click create

it should the connect to the network

  2. Hmmm says:

I cant get this to work, in network tools my wireless have ip and all.
but it will only try to connect to lan not wlan.
i have setup 20 times my wlan now but still only want to make profile in lan and try to use this.
I have restart PS3 5 times and allways end up with the auto lan profile.
Green LED on PS3 is active all the time but its like OS dont care.

How can i force OS to use my wlan ?

  3. admin says:

some routers you have to press a button on it for it to allow new devices to connect apart from that I cant think of anything but I will take a closer look.

  4. Hmmm says:

no the ps3 was connected to the same router before linux.
I dont want to press the button on my router, it will screw my settings and all other things wont work then.
it will only run on wired, i have another mobile router but need to open mac for PS3 then ill try wired on this one.

it wont even try to connect to wireless, only try on the lan.
and if i delete lan it will make its one profile, but it wont try my profile in wireless.

    in admin / network something
i can see the wireless have ip.
Where do i change these values ?
It shows the IP i type in at setup, but can only see the value.

Just install ubuntu on my Acer power 1000 and it runs with no problems.
then i want to try on my PS3 and its buggy compare to PC version.

Just try to run command boot-game-os and got error :(

Every 2 time i restart ore start i get error at the prompt, need to hold power for 5-8 sec. and then try again.
Hope some of this will be fix once i get network running.

  5. Hmmm says:

just try with lan, i get ip
192.168.1.100 but i cant connect to Internet ore my router 192.168.1.1

In admin / network tools i see the broadcast is 192.168.1.255

How to run the network setup again ?
Ore how to edit network config ?

  6. Hmmm says:

ill format HDD now and try install with the LAN this time.
Hope its then posible to setup the wireless afther this, this router is mobile and only 1-2 mbit my wireless is 10 mbit, so ill prefer to use my wireless.

  7. Hmmm says:

Just install with the LAN way.
Now my LAN works, and i got a way to setup wireless this optision was not in the first install.
at first no green LED when connect to WLAN but after some try the LED came on and looks like it do somting, but still no luck with the connection, i have try with WPA, TIP and AES, and with WEP, and finaly with no security at all.

In admin / network tools under WLAN
I get no IPv4 and no mac
Its like the WLAN adapter is not install.

  8. admin says:

I know that but your router will no longer recognise it as the same system and you will have to allow it access again I had to and so will you if that’s how your router works.

You should be able to right click the network icon in the top right to access advanced settings

  9. Hmmm says:

ok i have NEWVER used that button, but if linux want me to press the button i guess i have to :(

Its the first thing ever i have had to press the button.
I have PDA, Wii, PS3, PC, LAPTOP, SMAR PHONE…….

    its Linksys w54g

Ill try the button when i have time to set up my network again.

  10. Hmmm says:

Nope same when i press the easy setup button on router, still no IPv4 and no mac

I give up on this for now, to buggy

Root error at start-up, IRQ error at shutdown, cant see video on youtube, and cant get on to my network because of wireless problems.

Thx for youre time ill look back in a year to see if any improvements is made to the PS3 Linux.

  11. kirk says:

hmm i notice you use the Linksys w54g. I had nothing but problems with that model. Even after upgrading the firmware. I went and bought a wireless n gigabit router & all my ps3/linux/gaming/routing issues went away. If you do some research, you’ll find out for some reason that model is horrible to use with a ps3

  12. Jacob says:

hey does anyone know if the ps3 uses the broadcom chip

  13. untouchable says:

I just installed ubuntu on my ps3 since my laptop exploded. It was pretty simple with these guides but now I have a problem when connecting to wireless. This box pops up and asks me for my wpa wpa2 password even though its already entered.

  14. untouchable says:

also what are the rest of the settings supposed to be (dchp etc.)

  15. Hmmm says:

Those got wireless working, do you have GREEN LED on PS3

My last try ther was no light in the LED and no matter what i do no LIGHT in LED.

untouchable -> do you have green LED on PS3 ?

If im not wrong it shold be active when it try to find router.

  16. untouchable says:

yea the led is on, it finds my router, but just keeps asking me for the password. This authentication dialogue pops up and the password i entered is in hex. I googled the problem, some other people have it that are just using Ubuntu on their lappys. But I’ve yet to find a solution.

  17. Hmmm says:

untouchable -> can you get it working with no security on router ?

  18. untouchable says:

negative, takes a while to try and connect but doesnt succeed. no error

  19. on_the_edge says:

use a password generator available online, the pass phrase has to be the correct length.

  20. Kevo says:

FYI it doesnt look like ubuntu 8.10 is able to get WPA encrypted wifi at the moment but WEP should work!
here is where I got the info

  21. hulgerorsh says:

  24. DarkPrince says:

I just installed Ubuntu 9.x and my wireless is not working. I changed my Linux OS from YDL 6.x to Ubuntu 9.x. Wireless used to work with YDL 6.x.

The wireless works fine withthe PS3 XMB and I do not have MAC security settings on my router.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  25. Tuyre says:

Ubuntu 8.10 on PS3 wireless issue on initial install:

I have installed Ubuntu about 3 or 4 times now, and more often than not the wireless doesn;t work straight away. If you, like me, were sure that your wireless settings were correctly input, then just issue the command to restart networking from the terminal window:-

    $ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

This has worked for me everytime. Once networking is up and running oK, then update Ubuntu to the latest version, and you’re less likely to get network issues after that.
